Visit Gornja Jezera, a system of 12 lakes separated by travertine barriers, and enjoy a peaceful boat ride to the second area – Donja Jezera, located in a limestone canyon. Wherever you are in Plitvice, it is easy to see why its travertine marble formations are such an extraordinary natural phenomenon. The barriers, thresholds and other shapes created in these lakes, karst rivers and streams are still in the process of shaping the beautiful landscapes and thus making your walk through the park so enjoyable. It is these same travertine formations here that create numerous magnificent waterfalls. Over time, the water changes its course, leaving some barriers dry as it deposits new layers in other places. This constant evolution ensures that Plitvice Lakes never looks the same.
